This two-storey rear heated glass extension combined multiple glazing systems to create a modern, light-filled addition to the historic London townhouse. Nestled between two neighbouring walls, slim framed sliding doors and frameless structural glass panels create an impressive double-height glazed façade, flooding the open plan interior with plenty of natural light.

Frameless glazing is used throughout the interior of the extension, with structural glass balustrades and frameless picture windows linking from the original first-floor rooms on each side of the new living space. An entirely glazed glass roof tops the double height room, with slim glass beams supporting the large frameless panels, emphasising the sense of space.
To the ground floor of the heated glass extension, a set of sliding glass doors creates a seamless transition with the rear courtyard space, the slim 21mm profiles allowing the maximum amount of light to pass through the large glazed façade. The bespoke sliding system was specified with IQ’s heated glass, resulting in a radiant heating system that keeps the entire open plan living space at a comfortable temperature throughout the cooler months.
Using heated glass for home renovations and extensions has many advantages. Very little electricity is required to heat the glass, making it an energy-efficient heating method, whilst the metal oxide coating on the surface of the glass is fully transparent, ensuring that light transmission remains uninterrupted. In order to effectively heat a room, the amount of heated glass must account for only 20% of the floor area.
Structural glazing was used to link the new extension with the existing basement space below. Internally, a fire-rated glass partition lines the entrance to the basement, the frameless design in keeping with the rest of the minimally designed glazing, while meeting essential fire safety requirements for the new space.
Integrated into the floor beside the stairs and along the external patio space, walk-on structural glass floorlights allow natural light into the basement area. The floorlights were created using IQ’s thermally broken Invisio structural glazing system to produce frameless effect glazed units, maximising the light reaching the living spaces below.
The finishing touch to the bespoke extension project took the form of a structural glass BBQ installed in the sunken patio area. Frameless low iron glass was used to create this unique design, minimising the green tint that becomes exaggerated by exposed glass edges. With easy access to the home and the ground-level garden atop the adjacent steps, the barbeque provides the perfect indoor-outdoor living experience.
